As Veterans Day approaches, it is essential to recognize the sacrifices and contributions of those who have served their country. Among these remarkable individuals is Eric Palmer, a member of the Organic Valley team, whose military journey has shaped not only his life but also the lives of those around him. His experiences reflect a profound understanding of the values of friendship, family, and dedication.
A Path to Military Service
Eric Palmer joined the ranks of the United States Army in 2010, following a significant journey that began in his hometown of Rockton, Wisconsin. Coming from a family with a rich military background—his grandfather, father, two brothers, and four cousins having all served—Palmer felt a calling to continue this legacy. Describing his military family tradition, he stated, “It was a family thing. Coming from a small town, it was kind of important to my dad for us to do something beyond just staying here.”
After graduating from La Farge High School in 2007, Palmer initially pursued a career in construction, but he was inspired by his father to enlist in the Army to gain new experiences and connect with individuals beyond their local community. He underwent basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and soon found himself stationed overseas in South Korea, where he served as a Bradley driver—a vehicle designed to transport troops and provide support in combat scenarios.
Challenges and Triumphs in Afghanistan
After a rewarding year in South Korea, Palmer returned to the United States but not for long; he was soon deployed to Afghanistan. His deployment marked a challenging yet pivotal chapter in his military career. Palmer took on the vital role of a sergeant major’s driver, a position requiring immense responsibility in high-risk environments. His role served not only to protect personnel but also tested his ability to remain vigilant in dangerous situations.
Reflecting on his deployment, Palmer stated, “Attention to detail was big. You have to pay attention to the little things, everything and everybody.” These words highlight the intensity of military life, where even the smallest oversight can lead to severe consequences. During his time in Afghanistan, he also ascended to the position of personal security detail, safeguarding several high-ranking officials, including a general. His service in combat solidified his understanding of the sacrifices made by veterans and shaped his perspective on life post-deployment.
The Transition Back to Civilian Life
Upon returning home in 2013, Eric Palmer experienced a major life event; he proposed to his partner Macey at the airport, a moment filled with emotion and gratitude for his safe return. Macey, who also works with Organic Valley as a member of the Safety Team, recalls their journey—having known each other for years before a serendipitous reconnection led to their relationship. “Two weeks later he went to Afghanistan and was there for 10 months,” she reflected, illuminating the resilience that characterized their love story amidst the uncertainties of military life.
Transitioning from military to civilian life can be challenging. Palmer candidly shares, “It’s a state of mind. I try to keep it only on the good things, but once in a while, bad things come out, and I try to just keep moving forward. Left foot, right foot.” This mindset reflects a common struggle faced by many veterans as they navigate new pathways after their dedicated service.
Embracing New Beginnings
After retiring from the Army, Eric continues to honor his commitment to service in a different capacity as a member of the Facilities Team at Organic Valley. His desk is adorned with an American flag and patches from his Army days, serving as constant reminders of his journey and those he served with. “They remind me of how far I’ve come in my life,” he expresses, showcasing the pride he carries in his military background and the growth he has achieved since.
His journey has not only enriched his character but has also led him to a fulfilling personal life. Eric and Macey are parents to four children, ages 11, 8, 6, and 2, who fill their home in the picturesque Driftless region near La Farge with joy and energy. Eric pursues hobbies like woodworking and hunting, embracing an active lifestyle while staying connected to his roots.
The Value of Community Support
One of the most significant aspects of Palmer’s story is the importance of community and support for veterans. He readily assists friends and neighbors when they require help, reflecting the camaraderie and collaboration that is fundamental to his values, both as a soldier and as a member of society. Eric’s dedication to service is not limited to his military experience; it is woven into the very fabric of his life.
Encouraging Veteran Recognition
As we celebrate Veterans Day, it’s crucial to acknowledge the resilience and sacrifices of those who have served. Eric Palmer’s experience is a testament to the dedication of veterans who have risked their lives for the freedoms we often take for granted. As former New Hampshire Governor Judd Gregg eloquently noted, “The veterans of our military services have put their lives on the line to protect the freedoms that we enjoy. They have dedicated their lives to their country and deserve to be recognized for their commitment.”
In conclusion, the stories of veterans like Eric Palmer serve as reminders of the strength found in both adversity and support. As we reflect on their contributions, let us carry forward the spirit of gratitude and recognition not just on Veterans Day, but throughout the year.
