This summer, I had the privilege of interning at a private law firm in Connecticut, where I primarily shadowed esteemed attorney Reine Boyer. This firm specialized in various fields of law, including business and corporate law, family law and mediation, civil litigation, real estate law, and criminal law. This wide range gave me essential hands-on experience across all these practice areas, which was invaluable to my professional development.
Experience in Family Law
My work in family law was particularly engaging. I regularly drafted pleadings and motions, including requests for mandatory disclosures and complaints. The process of crafting these documents allowed me to sharpen my writing skills and develop a nuanced understanding of legal language. Additionally, I conducted case summaries, analyzed case discoveries, and reviewed financial affidavits, which deepened my appreciation for the meticulous attention to detail that legal work demands.
Engagement in Business Law
On the business law side, my experience was equally enriching. I had the opportunity to draft various contracts and agreements, such as retainer agreements and engagement letters, as well as real estate contracts. Conducting client interviews was a critical part of this work; it helped me gain insights into their needs and expectations, ensuring that the agreements were aligned with their goals. This aspect of legal work underscored the importance of effective communication and interpersonal skills in the practice of law.
Observing Judicial Proceedings
Moreover, I gained valuable insights outside of the law firm by shadowing various district superior court judges in Connecticut. Observing court proceedings firsthand provided me with a clearer understanding of the legal process and the vital role that judges play in interpreting the law. This exposure was instrumental in helping me appreciate the gravity of legal decisions and the impact they have on people’s lives.
Embracing Diversity in Law
One of the most rewarding aspects of my summer internship was the opportunity to work in a Black-owned law firm, founded by an attorney who is an immigrant from Jamaica. Considering that less than 5% of legal professionals are Black, working in such an environment significantly shaped my perception of my future in the field. Being surrounded by successful Black attorneys made it easier for me to envision a career that aligns with my passions and aspirations.
It also reinforced my belief that pursuing a career in law is a powerful way to serve my community. Much of my work at the firm had a direct and positive impact on clients’ lives. For instance, I drafted several trusts and wills, assisting clients in allocating their assets—an important process that less than half of Americans participate in. Additionally, I worked on a significant discrimination case that involved a young minority plaintiff being bullied at school. Although the case is ongoing, I am grateful for the chance to contribute to improving the life of this child and, potentially, the broader education system.
Financial Support and Career Growth
While the internship was unpaid, I am particularly thankful for the financial support provided by Pen Career Services. This assistance allowed me to pursue the opportunity with greater security, relieving some of the financial pressures that often accompany unpaid internships. I look forward to continuing my journey as a pre-law student, building on the experiences and insights I’ve gained this summer.
As the legal landscape continues to evolve, it will be increasingly important for aspiring attorneys to have diverse experiences and perspectives. My time at this firm was not only a stepping stone in my career but a chance to contribute meaningfully to the vibrant and complex tapestry of the legal community.
Reflecting on this summer experience has only intensified my enthusiasm for a career in law. I encourage other students considering similar paths to seek out internships that offer diverse experiences and allow them to make a tangible impact in their communities. Engaging actively with real-life cases can provide a transformative insight into the field, from understanding legal documentation to navigating the court system and advocating for justice.
