You can handle minor fixes and problems yourself, even though you may not have any previous experience of repairing toilets. The tips given below can guide you in fixing some of the most common problems you may encounter with broken toilets.

Partial flushes or constant running

If your toilet shuts off or on, or is constantly running, you will be able to fix it easily yourself. Remove the lid of the toilet tank and look for a chain that is connected from the back of the handle and runs towards the trip lever. The same chain is connected to a rubber flapper in the tank.

Flush your toilet to find the rubber flapper. It is usually black or red in color, and you can see it rise and fall in the tank when the water level changes. Check if the flapper closes the hole under it properly after you flush the toilet. One of the main reasons for a running toilet is when the chain is too short for the rubber flapper to block the hole properly. Purchase a chain that is longer than the current one from the local hardware store or home improvement shop. By just replacing the old chain with a longer one, you can perform the toilet repair yourself easily without any prior training.

Clogged toilets

Clogged toilets can be hard to handle, and difficult to use. You can unclog a toilet by just using a plunger. Place the plunger over the drain of the toilet. Make an up-and-down motion using the plunger over the drain. Do not splash water out of the toilet or break the seal of the drain. Plunge constantly up to 12 repetitions. Remove the plunger to check if the water has started to drain from the toilet. Repeat the procedure until you find all the water drained from the bowl.

Chemicals

You must not use the plunger in the toilet if you have used chemicals to drain the clog. Wear eye protection and protective rubber gloves when you are using chemicals to clear the clog during the toilet repair procedure. Do not use the chemical in the tank of the toilet as they may damage different tank components. Do not mix different chemicals as they can create toxic fumes.
