Funfair

The funfair is in town! That traveling group of fun rides, entertainment stalls and exotic foods is once again gracing our town with its presence. Their advertising boards and placards have been taunting the town for months before they arrived, and now they are here.

The children are excited, the grownups too, they just don t want to show it. It brings back so many fond memories of their youth gone by. Only the rides have changed at the funfair, the rest has remained unchanged. There are still shoot the hoops, and target shooting where you can win a soft toy or a teddy bear, there is still a ghost house, and a crazy mirror hall. The rides have evolved with the times. Essentially, they remained the same with swings and bump cars, they have just improved in safety and the daringness of a ride. Every funfair has a Ferris wheel, a dive bomber ride and a horse carousel. The music over the years has also remained typically the same.

There are lots to eat, lots to see and lots to do at the funfair. There is a particular smell to the funfair as well. Some dust, some oil and grease, some faint smell of gasoline and the heat of all the machinery and people. Candy floss, toffee apples,, hot dogs on sticks and popcorn, you smell it when you go through the entrance and you immediately want to try everything, all at once. There is no patience and the children run from one stall to the other, tempted with all the lights and bright colors and the smells and the inviting stall vendors.

Children and grownups of all sizes try their luck at games of chance. Prizes range from food tickets to fluffy toys to silly plastic golf sets. The smells and sounds take you back to yesteryear, and you become a child again.

I think people will be disappointed when they visit the grounds of a funfair during the day. There will not be any shiny lights, no loud music and no funny clowns trying to sell you some candy floss or trying to entertain you with juggling several balls at once. During the day, the funfair people are just ordinary people like you and me. They get up, they eat, they clean, they bath or shower, go about their daily business as any other human on the planet. They also have toothache, headache, heartache and any other ache you can think of. They will go to the shops to buy the same things you want to buy; food, clothing, toiletries, perfume and entertainment. They will have their favorite fragrance just the same as you and me. They have their chores to do, and their squabbles and scrapes, just like the rest of the world.

Many young children want to run off to the funfair or the circus. It has some romantic mystery about the whole concept. As you grow up, you realize that it is all false, it is all just pretend and make believe, and not the reality as you know it.
