Designing An Eye Catching Trade Show Display Stand

By Lawrence Reaves

You have only a few moments to attract the attention of trade show attendees and your display booth is your major weapon in your armory. First impressions absolutely count on the trade show floor and you must come up with a booth display which is functional and highly effective at attracting attention. A major mistake is to fail to appreciate how important your trade show booth is and poorly designed displays lead directly to trade show failure.

A spectacular trade show stand will attract attendees to you and away from the surrounding competition. This is not an issue you can make a second best effort with – you have to get this right first time!

Start the design process by clearly establishing two trade show objectives.

First: why are you exhibiting in the first instance – to make sales, make contacts a product launch or something else.

Second: establish what the message is that you are looking to transfer to your target audience.

Keep these two objectives firmly in mind for what follows.

Determine the Target Audience

Identify the target audience you are seeking to attract and maintain your focus upon that target audience. Cater to their desires and needs and focus on selling benefits not your product features.

Space Optimization

Trade show floor space is a premium and you must take advantage of the full space available. This includes being able to adapt to different rental spaces and irregular shapes. Always confirm the dimensions of the floor lot allocated before you book a show, but it will also help you if you forward plan flexibility into your trade show display booth to begin with. Modular design and modern materials provide for exceptional flexibility, but by being flexible you have to think carefully about the placement of your graphics. Pay particular attention to the height of the display and how you will display your central design elements, such as the company logo.

Text Elements

The words you use in the display need to be easily read, so that means making sure they are of the right size to be easily picked out. In addition, steer clear of fancy fonts and typefaces – you need a font which is easily read. Attendees will not be spending any of their valuable time trying to pick out what your booth stand has to say – give them the beef upfront!

Graphics

If you use photographs make sure they are of the very highest quality you can obtain. The right images speak volumes and appropriate choice of the graphical elements is crucial to creating an eye-popping stand. Life size images are particularly important and try to use imagery which reflects your product or service in action or being used.

Lighting

Lighting is not a luxury item! Lighting is essential to create tone and attract the eye. Lighting will also create atmosphere and ambience, so pay particular attention to how you highlight parts of your display booth and the overall impression conveyed by the display. Lighting accessories are extremely flexible tools to create a different presentation depending on the circumstances and they are easily managed and changed, even if you do have a fixed display stand.
